Turkish official killed by explosion in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu

Mogadishu, May 13, 2019 (Hornnews24) – A Turkish senior official has been killed in the Somali capital Mogadishu after explosives fitted into his car exploded on Sunday, police said.

Ali Hassan, police spokesman has said that the Engineer working with the Turkish troops in Somalia was mercilessly blown up in his car near KM4 Street.  He was taken to the Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Training and Research Hospital but was not able to be saved.

Al-Qaida-linked Alshabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack. The group’s spokesman described Turkish soldiers and officials working with the Somali government as enemies of Islam.

The bodyguards of the slain Turkish soldiers were also wounded in the blast. Turkey opened its biggest overseas military base in Somalia’s capital in 2017 to help Somali government train its soldiers.   The facility houses thousands of Somali soldiers for training purposes.

Somalia’s government has a number of foreign backers, including the United Nations, the African Union, and the United States, who are assisting it in building a functional national army capable of taking on the fight against the powerful al-Shabaab group. But Mogadishu always remains weak and incapable.
