Garowe, January 8, 2018 (hornnews24) – Said Abdullahi Dani was on Tuesday elected as President of Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland State.
Said Abdullahi Dani was elected by lawmakers by the narrowest of margins, scoring 35 votes in the third round of polling, just one more than his rival General Asad Osman Abdullaahi who got 31 votes. A total of 4 candidates contested for the presidency and 66 MPs who cast their votes
“I am very grateful for the support of my people who trusted me to run Puntland,” Abdullahi Dani in his late fifties, told those assembled at the parliament building.
Incumbent President Abdiwali Gas accepted defeat gracefully, wished his rival well and said the election had been “clean and democratic”.
