Somalia: Roadblocks, extortion and robbing are rampant in Galmudug state

Dhusamareb, August 12, 2018  – Reports indicate that increasing roadblocks set up by tribal armed men and excessive amount of money extorted by these bandits from the drivers and passengers are now rampant in all roads linking Mudug and Galgadud towns.

Mohamed Ahmed one of the vehicle owners of the area has complained of hundreds of roadblocks set up on the road between Galinsor and Bandiradley towns in Galmudug region.  He said that many civilians were robbed and killed by armed tribal men adding that businesspeople were robbed on daily basis.

Mohamoud Ahmed went on to say: “that merciless armed militiamen extort unaffordable amount of money in cash payments daily from the civilians using the roads and anyone who fails to pay such money could either killed or robbed”.

Lawlessness and corruption are rife in the region and people daily pay unaffordable amount of extortion to save their lives.   A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity appealed the Somali federal government and the Galmudug regional state to take appropriate measures against the increasing illegal roadblocks.
