Somalia: Plumes of smoke fill sky after huge car bomb explosion in Mogadishu

Mogadishu, April 17, 2019 (Hornnews24) – Massive explosion in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, that sent towering plume of smoke into the sky has claimed several lives including senior government officials and wounded others on Wednesday, witnesses say.

A car laden packed with explosives exploded near Hotel Mubarak frequented by the Somali government officials.  A police cardon has been put in place at the scene. Both journalists and paramedics were banned from attending explosion scene to hide the casualties from the public.

Crowds watched quietly from behind police cordons while the scene was convulsed by the tremendous blast and the air was instantly filled with huge stones, broken glasses and flying fragments of vehicles rent asunder and whirled aloft by the explosion. Plumes of black smoke billowed into the sky betokening the hugeness of the car bomb.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack but Al-Qaida-linked Islamic fighters known as Alshabaab have carried out similar attacks against the Somalia government and foreign forces.
