Somalia: Plumes of smoke fill sky after car bomb explosion in Mogadishu

Mogadishu, July 22 (hornnews24) – Plumes of black smoke can be seen filling the sky in the Somali capital, Mogadishu on Monday after a car packed with explosives rammed into a check point at the entrance of the Mogadishu international Adan Addeh airport, local sources say.

More than 10 people including senior government officials and soldiers have been killed in the attack and dozens were wounded.  Somalia’s Al-Qaïda linked group, known as Alshabaab has claimed responsibility for the assault.

A spokesman for the group has said that their fighters have killed dozens of government soldiers and routed out the rest in disarray before capturing the checkpoint.

The seizure of the checkpoint as a major blow to the Somali government and AMISOM troops who have claimed that they purged the city of Alshabaab.

The Somali government has not so far commented on the deadly attack but opposition leader, Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsameh has condemned it describing it as cowardly and unacceptable.

Alshabaab fights for flushing foreign forces out of Somalia and pave the way for ousting the Somali government to impose the Islamic Sharia law on the country.
