Mogadishu, May 30, 2018 (Hornnews24) – A military court in the Somali capital Mogadishu has on Wednesday sentenced three young men to death.
The men, Abshir Mohamed Haji, Farhan Maxamed Samatar and Abdinasir Dhaqaneh Hassan, were condemned to death for allegedly attacking hotel Nasahablod in Mogadishu on 28.10.2017.
The death penalty was announced by Judge Hassan who said that the all the men pleaded guilty. They were accused of storming Hotel Nasahablod where more than 20 people were killed. Al-Kaida-linked Alshabaab had claimed responsibility for that attack.
Somalia has the most corrupted court system without an adversarial approach to establish innocence and guilt, judges too rarely question whether confessions really are voluntary. Innocent people have been shown to confess to crimes in the hope of a more lenient sentence or simply to make the interrogation stop. It is believed that a tenth of all convictions leading to prison are based on false confessions.
For these reasons, the Somali president, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has recently sacked the chief justice and replaced him a law expert to establish in the country a fair judicial system on which people could rely.
