Mogadishu, May 14, 2019 (Hornnews24) – At least nine people have been killed and dozens injured when a car laden packed with explosives rammed into the administrative headquarters of Wardhigley District in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Tuesday, police said.
Initial reports indicate that there was a meeting attended by government officials and important personalities when the explosion occurred. It is believed that senior officials are among the dead.
Details are still sketchy and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack although Al-Qaida-linked group, known as Alshabaab, has carried out similar attacks against government soldiers and offices.
The Islamic fighters have ramped up their ambushes and attacks against the Somali government and foreign forces during the holy month of Ramadan.
Somalia has been in state of chaos and lawlessness since the early 1990s when Dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was toppled by clan-based warlords.
The weak Somali government left no stone unturned to try to defeat the islamists with the support of the international community and frequent air strikes by the United Sates but in vain.
