Somalia: Hirshabelleh State Police Commander Killed In Clashes

Beletweyn, June 12 (hornnews24) – Several police men including the police commander of the Hirshabelleh regional state have been killed and dozens were wound in clashes between two rival police men in Hiran region on Tuesday.

Police commander, Major Mohamed Mao died when clashes erupted between police forces loyal to Hiran regional governor and rival forces supporting the dismissed former Governor of the region, Yusuf  Dabaghed. Deafening sounds of gunfire awakened the residents of the area.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing dead bodies of soldiers lying on the ground. Somalia has been without a functioning central authority since the 1991 when President Mohamed Siad Barreh was ousted by warlords.

Somalia’s weak federal government only control parts of the Somali capital, Mogadishu. Thereafter, vast tracts of land are still controlled by the powerful al-Qaida-linked Alshabaab which fights for overthrowing the western backed Somali government to impose Islamic Sharia law on the country.
