A Somali Regional Electoral Commission on Monday officially authorized a former Alshabaab leader, Mukhtar Robow, to participate in the Southwest regional presidential elections to be held on November 17.
Mukhtar Robow had announced his presidential candidacy at the beginning of October. The South West State Electoral Commission has announced that Mukhtar Robow is officially a candidate and handed him his certificate of eligibility.
Most members of the South West State Electoral Commission have stepped down accusing the Somali federal government of interfering in the internal affairs of the region.
The energy minister, who resigned on Monday and is an ally of the federal government, will also participate in the elections. But the former jihadist seems to be a favorite.
