Al-Qaida affiliated group known as Alshabaab has captured a military base from the troops Galmudug regional state in Somalia on Wednesday when fierce fighting broke out between the two sides.
According to local sources, at least 9 government soldiers have been killed in the fighting and dozens of others were wounded. The fighting is between Alshabaab and allied forces comprising Galmudug state forces, Somali National Army, and tribal militiamen who joined hands to repulse Alshabaab’s attacks.
The Islamic fighters control scores of towns and villages in the region where they imposed Islamic Sharia law. They fight for toppling the Somali government and for driving foreign forces out of Somalia. Somalia has been in chaos since the collapse of its national government in 1991.
