Somalia: Explosion kills district commissioners, wounds Mogadishu Mayor

Mogadishu, July 24 (Hornnews24) – A huge blast followed by heavy gunfire rocked Banadir administration headquarters in the Somali capital, Mogadishu on Wednesday killing more than 15 government officials and injuring more than 30.

The explosion took place as officials were holding a security meeting in the mayor’s office shortly after UN official in Somalia had left the the headquarters.

Those killed in the explosion include among others three district commissioners, senior army officers and other regional officials who were attending a meeting on the security of the capital.

The mayor of Mogadishu who was presiding the meeting is among the wounded. Relatives say that he is in a critical situation. There are conflicting reports on the cause of the explosion.

Initial reports indicate that a suicide bomber has detonated explosives inside the office of Mogadishu’s mayor during a security meeting, while other reports suggest that a bomb planted inside the office caused the blast.
