Heavy fighting has broken out on Thursday between Somali government forces and Alshabaab Islamic fighters in near Balidogleh airstrip in Somalia’s lower Shabbelleh region.
The fighting erupted when the Alqaida-linked group ambushed a convoy of military troops heading towards Balidogleh airstrip, a base of US soldiers.
Alshabab has claimed responsibility for the onslaught saying that its troops have killed and wounded a number of US-trained Somali government soldiers and also seized two oil tanker trucks full of oil, weapons, ammunition and other military equipment.
The offensive is a part of a string of attacks waged recently by the group against Somali government soldiers and foreign troops in which dozens of soldiers were killed.
