Somalia: Alshabaab overruns government military base

Balad, December 12, 2019 – Several government soldiers have been killed and dozens were wounded when Alshabaab fighters launched sudden onslaught on a military base near Balad town of the Middle Shabelleh Region, at the heart of Somalia.

Fighters of the Alqaida-linked group have waged an attack on the military camp from various directions defeating the government soldiers without much resistance and overrunning the base.

According to initial reports Alshabaab fighters have seized ammunitions and military equipment left behind by the disorderly routed soldiers.

Somalia has for almost three decades been in the throes of conflict. The war torn country descended into civil war in 1991 following the overthrow of late President Mohamed Siad Barreh and has since remained in the grip of periodic violence.
