Afgoyeh, 23 June, 2018 (Hornnews24) – Al-Qaida-linked Alshabaab fighters said they had inflicted heavy losses on AMISOM and Somali Army on Friday in the Lower Shabelleh Region, south Somalia.
The AlShabaab fighters ambushed a convoy carrying troops from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and Somali federal government.
According to SomaliMemo newspaper, the ambush turned into a fierce fight between al Shabaab and AMISOM saying that the Islamic fighters destroyed at least three armoured vehicles from African Peace keepers and Somali army in the ambush of the a military convoy in an area between Afgoyeh and Warmahan towns, 60 km southwest of the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
Alshabaab has claimed that its forces had killed more than 10 soldiers of AMISOM and the Somali government troops while scores of others were wounded some of the seriously but the casualty figure could not be immediately independently verified as there was no independent confirmation of the report.
Neither the Somali federal government nor the AMISOM officials have so far commented on the attack. Al-Shabaab has vowed to defeat the foreign peacekeepers at any cost and to oust the weak internationally backed Somali government in order to impose its strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.
