Somalia: Al-Qaida-linked group kills 50 soldiers in central regions

Awdhegleh, August 14, 2019 (hornnews24) – Somalia’s Al-Qaida-linked group, known as Alshabaab, has killed more than 50 government soldiers in Awdhegleh town of the Lower Shabelleh region on Wednesday after fierce fighting there.

Heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters have stormed a military base at Awdhegleh town in Somalia killing more than 50 government soldiers and wounding scores of others.

Officials called it the region’s deadliest attack in years, highlighting the challenges facing Somali government forces from the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab.

Hundreds of residents came to see the corpses of the slain soldiers. “Those who saw the bodies of their young soldiers lying on the ground showed calmness and control instead of behaving emotional way”, said one of the residents who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

He added that after several hours of fierce fighting government soldiers were dislodged and whole the town fell into the group’s hands.

“Alshabaab fighters are all over the town firing heavy guns as they patrol the streets,” said the resident. “We are all indoors and all we hear is sounds of heavy guns and explosives,” he aaded.
