More than 150 Somali prisoners freed from Libyan jails arrive home

May 30, 2018 (Hornnews24) – A passenger plane carrying more than 150 Somali prisoners released by the Libyan government has touched down today the Mogadishu international airport.

These prisoners who were held in varied prisons are now back in the Somali capital Mogadishu.  They arrived at the Mogadishu airport early Wednesday morning, where they were greeted by Somali government officials and personalities.

The Somali ambassador to European Union, Ali Said Fiqi, who accompanied the prisoners, told reporters shortly after arrival that the Somali government had exerted every humanly possible effort to secure the release of the Somali prisoners in Libya with cooperation of IOM.

The ambassador highlighted that the Somali government would leave no stone unturned for the release of hundreds of Somali prisoners who are still behind bars in Libya.

The Somali refugees and migrants have suffered abuse at the hands of smugglers in Libya among them children, women and elderly men.  Humanitarian organizations say that migrants in Libya were subjected to numerous human rights abuses, including sexual and gender-based violence, forced labour and sexual exploitation.
