TUESDAY, AUGUST 11, 2020

At least four inmates and three prison guards have been killed when gunfire erupted in Mogadishu’s central prison, the capital of Somalia.

Security sources said that the fighting broke out when several inmates received pistols and grenades smuggled into the prison without giving further details.

A prison officer has said that at least one prisoner had escaped from the facility during the shootout. Unconfirmed reports indicated that the pistols and grenades were hidden in food brought to the inmates by their visitors.

The central prison is located next to Mogadishu’s seaport and is heavily guarded. Somalia is the most corrupted country in Africa and it is not still known whether prison officers were involved in the smuggling weapons into the prison.
