Somalia: Fighting between Somaliland and Puntland erupts at Tukarak

May 15, 2018 (Hornnews24) – Heavy fighting between two main regional states in Somalia – Somaliland and Puntland – has broken out today at Tukarak village of the Sol Region.

Scores of vehicles mounted with heavy guns, known as technicals, have been seen taking part in the fighting.  Each side has accused the other of igniting the offensive.

The commander of Somaliland’s armed forces, Gen. Nooh Tani accused the Puntland forces of attacking his forces at dawn today.

Likewise the information minister of Puntland, Abdi Hersi Ali, has pointed an accusing finger at Somaliland, saying that Somaliland has attacked the military base of Puntland at Tukarak village today. He went on to say that his forces had repulsed the offensive of Somaliland.

The minister said that Somaliland forces were pushed back and the situation was calm. There was no confirmation of the minister’s assertion.  Details are still sketchy and the casualties are not known.   Local people say that there is a lull in the fighting but there is still a sporadic gunfire.  The two sides are receiving reinforcements.
