Democratic senator Elizabeth Warren – a frequent antagonist of Donald Trump – has announced she is preparing to campaign for US president in 2020.
The 69-year-old released a video on Monday announcing she is establishing a presidential campaign exploratory committee – typically the first step in a US presidential candidate’s bid.
Mrs Warren has been one of Mr Trump’s fiercest critics during his almost two years in the White House.
The Massachusetts senator accused Mr Trump of a “racial slur” but was subsequently challenged by the president to take a DNA test to prove her claims, which she did in October.
However, the move – which revealed Mrs Warren has Native American ancestry between six and 10 generations ago – was controversial and was criticised by some Native American groups.
Formerly a professor of law at Harvard, Mrs Warren is considered to be on the liberal wing of the Democrat Party.
She rose to prominence during the 2008 financial crisis with calls for greater consumer protections, and even sometimes fought with Barack Obama’s administration at the time.
n the video revealing she is officially considering a 2020 bid, Mrs Warren said: “In our country, if you work hard and play by the rules, you ought to be able to take care of yourself and the people you love.
“No matter where you live in America or no matter where your family came from in the world, you deserve a path to opportunity.
“That’s the America I am fighting for, and that is why today I am launching an exploratory committee for president.”
No front-runner has emerged in the Democratic Party, and some two dozen candidates are expected to compete for the nomination.
