Hobyo, August 20, 2019 (Hornnews24) – Somali government has announced on Monday that it inked a $ 174 million deal with Qatar for for the renovation and rebuilding of Hobio seaport in Somalia’s Galmudug regional state.
The agreement comes amid a bitter standoff between Somalia’s central government and the politicians of Galmudug state which mounts the pressure on to the already political fragility within the country, especially a government that has been unable to secure peace and order in the capital let alone in anywhere else.
Some analysts believe that the so-called Hobio port deal is only a matter of paying a lip service to projects aimed at mollifying the politicians and traditional leaders of Galmudug State who boycotted a government-sponsored reconciliation conference to be held at Dhusamareb town.
Somali government has failed to live up to Galmudug Regional State’s expectations. It has made scores of vague promises which have been never accomplished. Mogadishu makes only false pledges aimed at luring the people into accepting its political whims.
