At least16 Ethiopian soldiers killed in Gedo Region, South Somalia

Baardheere, 3rd July 2020 (hornnews24) – At least 16 Ethiopian soldiers have been killed and dozens were wounded on Saturday when a suicide bomber rammed a car laden with explosives into aan Ethiopian military base in Bardhereh town of Ghedo region, South Somalia.

The attack, claimed by the Alqaida-linked, AlShabaab, occurred a day after when an Ethiopian commander, Lt. Gen. Tigabu Yilma Wondimhunegn, had taken over at the helm of AMISOM military operation in Somalia.

The Islamic fighters have recently ramped up their attacks and ambushes against the Somali government soldiers. Al Shabaab, which means “youth” in Arabic, control large parts of south and central Somalia. The group wants to drive out the foreign peacekeepers, topple Somalia’s western-backed government to enable to impose Islamic Sharia law on the country.

Somalia has been in a state of chaos and lawlessness since the early 1990s, when dictator Mohammed Siad Barre was toppled by clan-based warlords.

The Somali government left no stone unturned struggling to defeat the Islamists with the support of African troops including Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Brundi and Djibouti as well as Western aid and frequent airstrikes on Islamist targets by the United States but in still in vain.
