AMISOM and Somali soldiers rape women in lower Shabelleh region

Afgoye, June 22, 2018 ( – At least 19 somali women have been raped by the Somali government soldiers and AMISOM forces in recent months in the Lower Shabelleh region, South Somalia.

A meeting held on Wednesday by the Human rights commision of South-West autonomous state of Somalia has announced that both Somali soldiers and AMISOM foreign forces have committed rapes in the region.

The commission declared that Somali government troops had raped on 9.6.2018 alone at least 11 Somali women on the road between Afgoyeh to Baidoa towns.

The commission confirmed in a communiqué that a total of 19 women were raped recently by the Somali government soldiers operating in the region. The human rights commission also accused AMISOM and Ethiopian soldiers of similar crimes.

According to Human Rights Watch, the US-based rights group, Internationally funded African Union troops in Somalia have gang-raped women and girls as young as 12 and traded food aid for sex.

AMISOM said the alleged rapes were “isolated” incidents and called the report “unbalanced and unfair”.
