Thursday, May 30, 2019 (Hornnews24) – Heavily armed Fighters belonging to Al Shabaab have overrun a military base of a joint Kenyan defence forces (KDF) and Somalia’s Jubaland regional state soldiers in Afmadow District of the Lower Juba Province, Southern Somalia on Thursday, residents said.
According to witnesses, the Alqaida-linked group, Alshabaab, has dislodged the Kenyan and Somali joint forces after several hours of fighting. The two sides have exchanged heavy weapons fire and rocket propelled grenades.
Alshabab has accused the Kenyan troops of committing atrocities inside Somalia including rape, kidnapping and killings. Kenyan defence Force (KDF) previously gang-raped five Somali women in Somalia’s Ghedo Region.
Somali parliamentarians have at that time described the mass rape and killing by the Kenyan troops inside Somalia as unacceptable but suggested no measures to be taken against the crime.
Kenyan troops are part of an African Union Mission in Somalia, AMISOM. The mission is mandated by the African Union Peace and Security Council and authorized by the United Nations Security Council. Troop contributing countries include Uganda, Burundi, Kenya, Djibouti and Somalia.
Alshabaab, the al Qaeda-allied group frequently launches attacks on both Somali and foreign troops to try to topple Somalia’s weak government. The group fights for imposing Islamic Sharia law on Somalia.
