Balad, June 6, 2018 (Hornnews24) – Alshabaab Islamic fighters have killed at least 10 army officers and two lawmakers from Somalia’s semi-autonomous Hirshabelle state in an ambush on Tuesday together with their bodyguards.
Heavily armed al-Qaida-linked fighters known as Harakat Alshabab al Mjahideen (HSM) have ambushed a convoy carrying lawmakers and army officers and escorted by dozens of battle wagons at Elka Gelow Village near Balad town of the lower Shabelleh region almost 40 km north of Mogadishu.
The lawmakers, Ismail Mumin and Sheikh Dahir, died instantly on the spot as a rocket propelled grenade hit their car. More than 20 officers and personalities were also wounded in the attack, some of the seriously.
Shortly after the bloodshed, a spokesman of Alshabaab military operations, Abdiasis Abus Musab, confirmed the death of the legislators and army officers, adding that the group also seized two government battle wagons.
Al-Shabab aims to topple the government in Mogadishu and impose its strict interpretation of Islam in the country. Somalia has been at war since 1991 when clan-based warlords overthrew dictator Siad Barre and then turned on each other.
