MOGADISHU, July 1, 2018 – Unknown number of people was wounded on Sunday when Alshabaab Islamic fighters attacked with mortar fires heavily fortified headquarters of AU force known as AMISOM in the Somali capital Mogadishu.
The AU force headquarters is a fortified structure located on the grounds of the Mogadishu airport, which is also under high security. The AMISOM force, deployed since 2007, currently counts some 22,000 African Union troops.
Although AMISOM managed to push Al-Shabaab out of the capital the Islamic fighters still hold swaths of territory.
Recent Shabaab attacks in Somalia have targeted key government and security sites in an apparent bid to discredit claims by the authorities and African Union troops that they are winning the war.
Mortar shells have landed inside the AU compound but AMISOM has not so far commented on the attack. Alshabaab fighters have claimed responsibility for the offensive.
