7 people, among them, Turkish nationals killed in South Somalia, 21 others injured

Mogadishu, January 18, 2020 (hornnews24) – At least 7 people among them two Turkish officials have been killed and more than 21 others have been wounded after a vehicle laden with explosives rammed into a convoy escorting Turkish nationals near Afgoyeh town 30k north of the Somali capital, Mogadishu on Saturday, in what is being touted as the second biggest attack on Turkish nationals in Somalia.  

Al-Qaida-linked group, Alshabaab, has claimed responsibility fort the attack saying that several Turkish men were killed and six others were injured while more than 5 Somali soldiers among them a senior officer were killed and dozens were wounded.

Most of the casualties were Turkish contractors and Somali security men who were escorting them.  Two armored vehicle was also annihilated by the explosion.

Turkey has invested heavily in Somalia, with technical and development assistance exceeding $US1 billion ($A1.5 billion), according to the Turkish government.

Turkish companies run the international airport and seaport in Mogadishu, and in 2016 the Turkish president inaugurated Turkey’s largest embassy complex in the world there.
