10 people, including one suspect, were killed early on Sunday in a shooting in Dayton, Ohio, and at least 20 others were taken to hospitals with injuries, police said.

Authorities gave no details about the circumstances of the shooting except that it occurred in the city’s Oregon District, an historic neighborhood known for its nightclubs, bars, art galleries and shops.

The Dayton Daily News reported that the incident took place at or near an establishment called Ned Pepper’s Bar in Dayton’s Oregon District.

In a post on Twitter, the Dayton police department said that an “active shooter situation” had begun at 01:22am.

In a separate tweet, Dayton police said it had officers “in the immediate vicinity when this shooting began and were able to respond and put an end to it quickly”. It said the FBI were assisting in the investigation.

Miami Valley Hospital spokeswoman Terrea Little was quoted as saying by The Associated Press news agency that 16 victims had been received at the hospital, but she could not confirm their conditions.
